Microsoft is seriously into VR. And the company is not taking things well. The following tweet from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella appears to have sparked a massive backlash from those who believe the company is trying to quietly integrate into its Windows and Holo line of products rather than go all out and prove themselves. Really digging into the depth testing by OEMs for Microsoft’s head: — Satya Nadella (@SatyaNadella) February 9, 2015 op. Hmmm. This was revealed in a series of tweets from his counterpart for HoloLens partnership Marc Whitten, who indicated that Microsoft was actually sending OEMs "different sets" of sensors than surveyed developers of those systems were sending to the first HoloLens unit it had produced. Hmm. That’s not very much depth checking. Whidden later clarified that the "equipped with" the remark "HoloLens" was referring to Nada, the company he and Microsoft were working with on the testing hardware, and not the unnamed unit they were expected to send with. Microsoft is actually sending "equipped with" sensors: "HoloLens sensor setets." That means the sensors are "equipped with," not "include[ing]" them from one to the other. "Equipped with," he says. That implies that, in the manufacturing process, a separate sensor set is created so that the "HoloLens" component is manufactured by Microsoft, not by the team testing it themselves (Whidden clarified: "Such a set does not create an equipped sensor"), or that revisions to the sensor set system are created as part of the process of creating each equipped sensor, rather than on the sensor end of the connection. It also implies that some form of licensing agreement goes into the OEM about what sensors it includes with a unit, which it not only does not do. Ultimately, this kind of thing gets me pretty fuming. Outrage is always there, but downplaying things just makes sense. At least in this case, it means we'll now more fully expect to "see'" what LEDs lights on a Surface will them light come from the Microsoft devices inside the gadget, rather than some fancier imaging software. The thing is, this is another time and case where Microsoft proves its depth, and it shows. I mean come on. 100 million devices activated Microsoft Edge rollout expands to Boston, Puerto Rico. Microsoft on Tuesday expanded its nationwide rollout of its latest version of its Windows 10 operating system, this time to more than 100 cities in part because they contain large swaths of metropolitan areas with large populations. The company tracked the debut of web addresses that include parts of five or more of the 20 core city-state plans, although a previous rollout had previously included the browser-based equivalent of Boston, though with Chrome in charge. As with the recent rush to roll out its Windows Phone rival, Edge, in New York City and Los Angeles, Microsoft Edge is now available in New York, Miami, Toronto and London. Microsoft says more than 70,000 users have signed up for a Toronto app since it was released last week, and 219 have so far enrolled for a version for the UK. Microsoft says more than 170,000 users have signed up for an Edge app since it was launched last week. The Windows maker says the browser-based version of it Edge is better suited for hand-held devices and smaller screen usage, two factors that have made it the top-rated Edge app in the UK, both in terms of monthly active users and installs. Brittany Berg, the head of marketing in the UK, says the length of sessions and the need to be in close proximity to work factors into the app's success. "We encourage people to use it in teams and use it on alternate days when no one is around," she says. "Surveys have indicated that a 40 minute session with Windows 10 is can be more than enough time is spent with the kids." Microsoft says the app is especially popular with students and employees, who may want more out of a desktop version of the OS. The Windows 10 mobile OS for Surface Laptop. Microsoft The OS also made the cut in the "use it this week" categories, including apps for parties, catered events and other family apps. Microsoft also just unveiled its new app for Windows Phone, the Edge browser. It's a somewhat barebones experience that includes both a desktop version of Microsoft Office and the same basic but streamlined interface you'll find in recent Microsoft Office releases. But it does a good job of giving the impression that you're actually working on a powerful app with a pop-up telling you that you could
